I want to prelude this post by first saying that the small image doesn't show the details that the big picture does. That said, here are the steps that I used:

First I used GIMP's color decompose of Lab colors and merged the A and B channels setting the top layer to lighten only. I copied the resulting layer back into GIMP. I then cut out just the fruit and table and set this as top layer. I set this layer attribute to color. I set the A/B layer attribute to overlay. I then duplicated the base layer (original photo) and set the new layer to saturation at 70% opacity. I then used a custom background (looks like a blurred scottish tartan) and set this layer to just above the base layer. I duplicated this custom backgound and removed the area which matched the top (fruit and table) layer. I set this attribute to overlay. The complete custom background layer I set to 80% opacity. I then merged all layers. I then duplicated the resulting layer and Used GIMPressionist with wavy brush, Orientation (Directions=8, Angle span=180, Orientation set to Flowing), and Size (all defaults, except Minimum size set to 12, and Size set to Flowing). I then reduced the opacity to around 50% and saved the resulting image. I opened the image into Photoshop, and I duplicated the layer. I then used Photoshop's crosshatch brush to create this type stroke. I reduced the opacity to 50% and flattened all layers and saved the image. I then opened the image back into GIMP and used GIMP's Bumpmap filter to give it the texture that I like (non-inverted). I then duplicated this layer and burgandized it (using a color adjustment). I then adjusted the opacity down to were I liked it and flattened all layers.

For those interested, I posted the big picture online and can be found here (hosted by Imageshack/ http://www.imageshack.us ): http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/8708/fruitlt1.jpg. The size was too big, so I had to split the image in two; just be aware that the big picture is nearly 2MBytes large. Hope you all like it.

Lovely image. The burlap texture of the background tecnds to be imprinted somewhat on the fruit themselves. I like the lightness (brightness) of the image too.

Thanks for the comments Howard. I wanted that burlap look; might have over did it though (my own worse critic). I do not know if you tried to view the big picture yet, but if so, you will see the brush stroke work as well.
