I have an old version of Corel Photo-Paint 7 which I have wanted to learn to use…I found this site several months ago and while users here mostly use Photoshop, many of the techniques are similar and the site definitely shows what is possible. I have been trying some of the challenges to find my way around Photo-Paint and decided that this one would be interesting and useful as it would require the use of tools not normally used in retouching or restoring photos.
As it has been many years since I took Art History 101, I did an Internet search and tried to determine what made a Cézanne a Cézanne. He didn’t consider detail in objects to be important being interested in “form over content” and while his paintings can be divided into a number of periods and styles he seemed to interested in repeating shapes and “…creating space and depth of perspective by means of planes of colour”.
Initially I tried to make the photo of thefries, coffee, and burger into a Cézanne painting…while this allowed me to experiment with the various brushes, effects, and other tools in PP7, I wasn’t happy with the result. I realized that Cézanne would not see a burger and fries in the same way as the photographer (the photo’s style is more “pop art”- closer to Andy Warhol). Others have changed the perspective of the photo by placing the objects into a scene they have composed, I took it one step further…I took the objects (burger, fries and container, ketchup) removed them from the photo and put them, with apologies and thanks to Cézanne, into one of his paintings.
I created masks >objects from masks to create and separate the hamburger, the fries and container, and ketchup. Using various tool I first outlined the objects (charcoal tool) and then using cloning, brushes of various types, colours from the photo and the Cézanne painting, I tried to make them look like they were painted by Cézanne…I am obviously no Cézanne. I could only find one image of Cezanne’s art that had any text, so I removed it from Fries container. I then put the objects into the original Cezanne work. I learned a lot…about Cezanne and about Photo-Paint.
