First I desaturated the photo and cropped it. I used levels and curves to get more contrast and bring out image. I duplicated it, changed mode on copy to lab, copied the lightness channel, and pasted it into the blue channel of the image that I was working on.
I repaired the damaged areas with the clone stamp, healing brush, patch tool, blur and smudge tool. I used the burn and dodge tool to bring out detail.
I found some photos of German Shepard pups, and King Charles Spaniels to replace some of the details on the dog’s faces and other areas on the dog’s bodies where the detail was lost.
I colored the image by making separate layers in color mode for each area. I then painted in color using different opacity and also experimenting with different blending modes to get the most natural effect.
I merged layers and then played with the hue and saturation, dodge and burn, clone stamp, and levels to bring out detail. I than ran a Gaussian blur to get rid of some of the noise.

Gorgeous!! Verrry nice color for dog on the right + the ruffled coat is real cute on him/her The upholstery is absolutely perfect. Thats where I gave up when I tried this one. Looking at what you have achieved makes me want to try again I just wish you had put in some color into the backgroud wall... I guess it would have given this image that picture-perfect look.
