First I cropped in a little and then changed to grayscale.
I used levels and curves and screen and multiply modes to bring out detail.
I then did a lot of cloning and patching. I made a pattern stamp out of a mended area and then used it to patch a lot of the background.
I used the burn and dodge tools to also bring out detail, and I also went back to curves and levels to continue to adjust contrast.
I changed back to RGB and added a sepia tone. I blurred the background slightly to make the car stand out, and added some noise to make the photo more uniform in appearance.

Excellent restoration Cathy,
I like your decision to use sepia.
It looks well balanced tonally.
Good work on the difficult facial areas.
Bet you had a good rest after all the work on this one.

Cathy

A very good restore on a very difficult photo.
As I have said to Matt I gave up on the background - just kinda blurred and burnt it!
The detail you have obtained is amazing.

Toning, contrast and levels look great. Like the crop, and the really fine job you did on the men and faces. The only thing I'd suggest would be the door seams need a touch more clean-up. Very nice restore Cathy.

Thanks everyone. My car needs some work. I think that my photo needs to be straightened out a bit as the buildings look crooked.

Good details... and good restoration work..

It is like that cathy, the repeat monitoring of an image may demand for its rennovations..
do the best..

I like the work on the faces particularly, you've achieved a nice toning and detail in a small area. Also well done in bringing out some of those background elements.

Thanks, Mark. I still need to work on the car, but can't seem to get back to it.
