In CS2, duplicated original and desaturated new layer.
Overall level adjustments to darken photo.
Created a copy of that layer to work on because I wanted to keep the original intact.
Clone, copy/paste, despeckle, blur and add noise to remove/cover defects.
Erased original background and created new one.
Worked with multiple luminosity layers (CTRL/ALT/ ~) to lighten and darken areas of photo to enhance contrasts.
Copy merged layers as I worked.
Found a good photo of a girl with wavy hair. Copied and pasted sections of that photo over original hair. Smudged in stray hairs with #4 brush, opacity of 87%.
Kept bringing portions of original photo back in at low opacity to maintain original features, especially the eyes, lips and nose.
Applied gaussian blur to entire retouched photo, took snapshot, and undid gaussian blur.
Used history brush set to blurred snapshot, low opacity, normal mode to go over skin areas that still looked uneven.

This looks great Lorraine,
The extra work you put into the hair really shows.
I love the way you have pulled the fine strands.
I have been looking for a good hairbrush for a long time.
That blown out shoulder bugged me too.
Good job toning it down and retaining the original pattern.
Skin tones look great and you fixed the harsh shadow under her chin.

Thank you, Matt.

For some unknown reason, the "hair pulling" was fairly easy on this one. I don't normally have that much success with it. I worked the hair on a duplicate layer of the photo. Also, when I got a few strands that looked pretty realistic, I copied, duplicated and moved them around to create more. Also I blurred some of them to fade them out.

I, too, have been trying to find that perfect "hairbrush" that I don't think exists

Wonderful work Lorraine.

I couldn't agree more with Matt's comments.
Great hair, Great skin.
You have taken a lot of care with this, and it shows.
Brilliant!

Regards
Steve

Really nice job Lorraine. I have to admit I've looked at this challenge before and chickened out. You've spurred me on! I'm really impressed.
