I felt the original was a little dark and the shadows a tad on the harsh side. I used levels to adjust the lightness. To soften the shadows, I copied the highlights to another layer and blurred them so they would diffuse out into the darker areas. I reduced the opacity until the skin texture began to show through and selectively masked out areas I didn't want affected. I selectively sharpened and cropped to a new aspect ratio.

Fine work Bob,
I really like the lighting on her face.
And the darker background gives a dramatic look.
