Doug Colwell Senior Member Registered: October 2003 Location: Alberta Posts: 157 users gallery	Most of the spots were selected with the magic wand tool, levelled to a point where most of the faces cleared up, and then lots of dodging and burning and cloning. Next was a series of levels/alt masks to adjust different areas - trees, roof, people. The chimneys were cloned from the existing chimney section, and the left side of the right chimney was a copied patch that I transformed/distorted to fit. The sky was cloned relatively smooth, and then cloud filtered. I had every intention of following the rules to the letter and re-sizing to 800 wide, but this resulted in pixels the size of bricks and all of those faces were obliterated (thanks to everyone else who ignored the rule). Unsharp masked (44-20-0) and alt masked to paint in more contrast where I wanted it. I found that after re-sizing, the resulting small jpeg required quite a bit more fiddling to get rid of the compression artifacts (especially in the faces). Next time I think I'll try resizing earlier.

A fabulous restoration Doug,
The amount of fine detail work in this is staggering.
With 63? people in this photo I think the wider submission looks great.
It adds interest to the photo when you are better able to see fine detail in the faces, clothing and house.
Good job handling the jpg compression problem with large submissions.
I had to hammer mine with 50% compression to get it under 200k.
Great work reducing grain and blown out whites in the dresses and shirts.

Klassylady25, I think I see what you mean about the chimney style and have altered them a bit, but as for the missing child I think you may have mistaken the hand of the 2nd man from left for a face, and it looks to me like the 2nd woman from the left is holding a rolled up piece of paper, or maybe a fan.

Matt, I've got two old chimneys going cheap, and I'll throw in a blown-up umbrella.

Thanks Doug, I'm only in the market for a right hand chimney.
That darn umbrella like object drove me crazy. I zoomed in on it.
Looked at it for 10 minutes and still couldn't make sense of it.
An upside down umbrella with no handle, high in the air?

Did you notice that many of the family members are smiling? Quite unusual for this period, but obviously they were having quite a celebration. So my theory on the umbrella like object, is that it IS actually an umbrella that's been turned inside out and the guy holding it up for the camera is having a great old laugh. Who knows... maybe a wee bit of moonshine had been consumed?

Thanks Peter S. Peth and Matt, my guess on the umbrella is that it collected rain from the roof for watering flower pots on the veranda. It's tiny size in relation to the people, makes me think it's propped up behind the group, under the eave, (maybe there's a rain barrel underneath?).
