I only tried it because I have a bunch of photos of similiar age with similiar color cast problems that I want to work on. I thought I would use this as a trial run. Well, as it turns out, getting rid of the color cast was the easier part. There was a whole lot of cloning that I hadn't noticed when I first opened the image. Also the photo has a lot of mould on it. I kept wishing I had the original and some cleaner so that I could give Gramps' face and his shirt a good cleaning. The bottom left of the photo looked like it had been eaten up with acid and the bottom right had a yellow stain. Then the faces of the three people on the right were over exposed while Gramps looked like he had worked in the sun his whole life and been dragged through the mud minutes before the photo was taken. Most of what I did was straight forward cloning. I switched to CMYK to work on the faces and skin tones and then finally adjusted the colors in LAB mode using Apply Image. Also an auto contrast of the Magenta Channel in CMYK helped lift the face tones. I can't quite remember what else I did. I spent quite a lot of time on it - more than I had expected to.

Very nice job. The faces and dress look good and good work restoring the background. Maybe the bottom of the picture is a little dark still - perhaps a gradient adjustment. Overall though - well done.

Thanks Margaret. You are right. I got rid of the yellow stain but darkened it too much in the process. I hadn't noticed that but it becomes obvious if I turn the lights off in the study.
