For this challenge, in PS7 I first selected the young man and copied him to a new layer. I then proceeded to clean up the background by using Dust and Scratches and the History Brush. Then, switching to the layer with the young man, I cleaned up the larger damage with the Clone Tool and switched to the Healing Brush for smaller repairs. With the repairs made, I duplicated the layer and applied gaussian blur to the top layer and faded it into the bottom to eliminate noise.

The colorization (my least favorite task)was pretty straight forward. A layer with the blending mode set to Color was created for each element. A color was applied and then adjusted using either Hue/Saturation/Lightness or Brightness/Contrast. For the uniform, I found a photo on the Inter net and copied the colors from it.

Finally, I flattened the image and applied the plug-in filter "Digital ROC" to make a final adjustment on the colors.

Hi JB

Nice colorization. I really like the skin tones and eyes. Is that the new "Tree & Sky" camoflage that the marines are trying out...

Thanks
Jerry

Jerry,

Actually, I believe it's called "leaves on swimming pool".

I was as surprised as anyone to find blue on a set of camoflage fatigues. The source photo looked like Army infantry.

Had to laugh at Jerry's Tree and Sky comment.

Great job Jim and I love the hand colored look. Nice work.

I'm new to this but I know what I like and I think you did a great job on restoring this old photo.
