I've worked on this one so long I can't remember much about how I did it. Used five or six layers with different blending modes (mostly screen, I think) to bring the information out of the dark. Amazing how much detail was actually there, given the appearance of the starting point!
Then made a pen selection around the figures and put them on a new layer to get rid of the background. After that it was clone, and clone, and clone . . . couldn't work on it very long at a time or I'd go blind. After each small area I'd 'paint' the grain back in with the healing brush.
Tried very hard not to add any detail that didn't already show through that badly crazed and fogged varnish layer - though I'd swear the boy was wearing glasses, or swim goggles. The only liberty I took was to restore the oval frame envelope and then put the figures outside of it. Seemed appropriate, somehow, after all that work to liberate them
Finished up with a noise layer and heaved a big sigh of relief.

This is beautifully done and such a difficult original to work from. Details are delicate and it presents quite a styalistic finish. Art Neuvaux? or Art Deco? The subjects outside the frame works so well .. it's gorgeous!

I could almost hear that sigh of relief .. well deserved.

Thank you so much Leanan for your very kind words. Can't tell you that I was aiming for any style - the image just emerged and told me what to do.

Now if I can only keep myself from going back to add glasses!
