Hi everybody!
....back to work, to my computer and to RP...

This time I decided to try Retouching Challenge #20...and here is how I tackled it:

1) I duplicated the image and converted it to Black and White using the Channel Mixer, (I checked the Monochrome box and adjusted the Red and Green Sliders each to 50%).

2) I made a selection of every single part of the picture: skin, eyes, hair + eyebrows...etc.

3) I run a stronger Filter->Noise->Dust&Scratches on the background then a 'softer' one on the soldier, to clean up the image a little.

4) I used the Clone and Blur Tools, both set to either lighten or darken and adjusting Opacity and Strenght according to necessity, to remove the last scratches and spots.

5) At this point I started colorizing each part of the image following Katrin Eismann method of creating a new Layer for each selected part, filling it with the colour of choice, setting the Blending to Color, adjusting the Opacity and, if necessary, correcting the colour with the Curves until satisfied with the result.

6) I used the Levels, Color Dodge and Color Burn to enhance the image and Flattened it.

7) I Cropped the picture to straighten it and added a little Noise before converting to .JPG.

Having read only now the part concerning the "educated guesses about what the colors should be", I'm not sure I got the correct colours...

Thanks to John for the nice challenge and to you all.

Ciao....Flora.

Excellent repair and colorizing. I wasn't sure about the colors either. Maybe someone will tell us.

Very nice. The hair and brows look very natural, and the eyes are soft enough to blend yet still stand out. Skin looks good too. Could have been a bit of green in the uniform, but who really cares what he wears, eh? Overall, great job!

All-round nice. Beautiful eyes.
Maybe the uniform colour depends on what army/service/country he's from...?

Flora -- you're back-- yippee!! AND you're back to submitting wonderful work! I, too, was attracted by the thumbnail, even before I noticed it was done by you, and the larger image shows what a great job you've done. The skin coloring is wonderful, and the camoflage was handled excellently. Your selections are crisp and accurate, and the image looks beautiful -- any mother or father would love this image of their son!

His forehead does have a too-bright area, but it's just a little too hot.

CJ..Thank you so much for your kindness which I appreciate enormously and for your great comment!!!

As for the "too-bright area on his forehead" , you are absolutely right!
I'll just blame it on my mediterranean nature tending to put the sun everywhere!!!!!!
