Finally got to something i could live with (especially given the excellent submissions so far).
1. Cropped border off plus a little on the right side.
2. Couple of gentle passes thru Noise Ninja.
3. Clone cleanup on separate layer, then working merge.
4. More cleanup, then degrunge.
5. Levels adjustment layer.
6. Final working merge, final touchup.
7. Gentle high-pass sharpen.

Good work, Carole.
You've gotten good detail out of that horribly textured photo. Also, great cleanup of the floor, and the little boy's shoes look really good.
I'm still working on mine

Fine work Carole,
Great job removing the flaky texture.
It takes hours of delicate work to reduce it
without blurring fine detail.
One suggestion - Mom is leaning forward and her left shoulder is raised very high.
That is exactly as it was in the original photo.
But to my eye it looks a little unusual and distracting.
What do you think Carole? Am I the only one bugged by it?

Lorraine - thanks, and keep working. It's a good feeling when you're done and I'm looking forward to seeing your result.
Matt - thanks to you too. You're not the only one bugged by Mom's position; she's really hunched forward. I found it disconcerting but couldn't figure out how to change it realistically. And then it would have been a retouch, not a restore. (Not that taking out the other distracting elements isn't already retouching . . . )

She was trying to see Terry's face and hear what was being said.... and you're right to change Mrs. Edwards position would be to retouch. You've done a great job.....
