Went the artistic route on this one (since the originator gave us an option for it). Sorry for the compression quality; the high quality version can be found here.
New member and first post. I really enjoyed this version. You maintained all the detail of the subject while going with a touch of Monet for the background.
I am fairly new to the photoshop world and I feel like I will learn alot from this site. I am deployed overseas right now but I may just take up one of these challenges.

Thanks for the comment afgoalie. If you like, take a look at the artistic retouch forum.
Also wish you the best by the way. Was deployed myself a little over a decade ago. Prayers are with you and your comrads during this time.
Sites like this have really opened my eyes to photoshop and whats possible. I appreciate the sentiment and I will check out that forum. Thanks...

Thanks for the pos comments afgoalie. I used a combination of filters and smudging/layer properties in both GIMP and CS2 (not in love with either editor; take what works in each and come up with something good hopefully; lol). GIMP's my crutch since I've used it for so much longer the PS, but certain things only PS can do (again GIMP can do things simple where it would be quite convoluted in PS to do the same, so I use both). Get a copy of Impressionist and Paint Engine and you have a pretty good foundation to start with. I actually used GREYCstoration (in GIMP) too.
