Using PhotoImpact version 5

After realizing that the background was "phony" I imagined that the chaps and gun were props that remained standing when our ersatz cowboy stepped away. Ha!

Other things I noticed while checking out this photo: There is a fingerprint in the upper right corner as well as to the right of his left shoulder; There appears to be handwriting half-obliterated along the bottom; There is a hint of floorboards. I wanted to keep these things in the photo - they are part of the history of this photo and worth preserving.

Split into CMYK and kept the Y layer as it was crisper overall and the highlights were not as blown out. Then applied Tone Map settings of Hilight +12, Mid 0 and Shadow -12.

Clone, Dodge and Burn away the damage but did not strive for perfection - leave some "wrinkles" on this old photo. Dodged and Burned some stripes in his vest and put in some floorboards. To smooth the face, I selected his face, excluded the eyes, nostrils and lips but did include that marvelous ear. To this selection, a Gaussian Blur (10), Add Noise (10) and Merge at 60% transparency was done. A light touch of Dodge and Burn to the eyes to help emphasize them a little.

To finish off, the border was extended on the left, Tone Map Highlight +5 then I Burned the top of his chaps to reduce the blow out. A hint of sepia colour was added for warmth and aging.

You have a very discerning eye Tom. How were those photo's taken, there appears to be no sign of any kind of shadow cast on the backdrop?

hehe nice detective work Tom I had thought it was a backdrop, but still hadnt noticed many of the details you picked up.

As you have stated you have handled this one with sensitivity to the original and it shows, his fleece and the foreground are well worked indeed

i notice your work having such a great feel of authenticity. you really know how to work a photo but not overwork it. i went and explored your website as well.... you stay true to the "feel" of the original print.

thank you as well for all the info about your technique that you share.

loved what you did with the border too.

so nice

Hey Nick,

I'd have to say that the light source is in the upper right. I suspect by the angles of the shadows on his face and scarf that it is maybe a foot or two higher than the cowboy and is fairly close to him, shining down. (Note also the chaps are blown out on top and get darker as we approach the floor.)

That would make for his shadow going off to the left of the photo but because of the angle, his shadow would be relatively short and fall just short of the backdrop.
What do you think?

...Tom
P.S. Thanks to everyone for viewing and taking the time to comment.

Excellent job Tom. The border really gives it an old look.

H! Tom,
I see what you mean, and agree, that would give for a forshortened shadow down and behind him. The lights I would imagine would have strong as well, as his left eye looks as if it is closed slightly possibly in automatic protection.
