Matt, I sense a frustration in your tone. Whilst I think your work is good, it is not up to your usual standard

Thanks Nezbitten - I had a terrible time with the hands.
They were so dark and the fingers seemed un-naturally long.
I had to do a lot of cloning and toning.
I desaturated the dress to and added colors whiten it.
But I forgot her bonnet. It’s still grayscale. Doh!
Cassidy – “Naaah, It wasn’t frustration behind this one.
My work doesn’t improve doing safe and conservative restorations.
I tend to over-retouch {Big Time}.
I fail most times but occasionally one will come out well.
I seem to learn more about restoration pushing hard this way.
I only do restoration for fun. If one in five turn out ok I’m happy.

Hi Matt, I like the monochromatic look. The repairs and colouring look great, and I really like how the hands turned out. There's something not quite right with her left eye - the iris looks heavier compared to it's mate (this is more noticeable on the smaller pic for some reason - I think maybe the reflections are too small to show up). As for the bonnet I didn't notice that at all until you mentioned it, and now it shines like a 100 watt bulb. Still, I think you did a great job on this restore - especially in terms of preserving the details and likeness.

Hi Matt,
Saw this one in the thumbnail and knew it was your work.
Very good job on a very difficult subject. Love the colorization. I think that's becoming your speciality.

Doug, You spotted the thing that bugged me most about my restoration.
I worked on the eyes at 500 zoom and thought I had
matched the catch-lights and shading.
But at 100% the catch-lights practically disappeared in one eye. Strange?
And as you commented it just didn’t look right.
I enhanced the catch-lights and evened the tones in the eyeballs.
Then I moved one eye 2 pixels closer to her nose.
Only small changes, but when it’s the eyes, it can make a huge difference to someone’s appearance.
Thanks for the help.
Matt

Lorraine - I wasn't sure how this would look in color.
I would have dropped back to sepia if the colors seemed wrong.
But I liked the way the color on the hands led my eyes to the small photo.
I love these studio portraits with their great old backdrops.
Doug - I'll keep em comin’.
But I count on you and Lorraine to keep me honest.
I was tempted use the eye flip shortcut until I read your comments to Nezbitten.
I agree, most flips look odd and give a cross eyed appearance.
Best Wishes
Matt

Beautiful work, Matt
I especially like the work on the table.
The facial work is on spot, but the shadow below the lip is distracting to me, otherwise it's perfect.
The picture's owner couldn't expect better.

Lovely work Matt
The eyes and hands are excellent!
And I wish I'd thought to add a little outer glow to the candle flame.!

Thanks for the comments Bill,
If I owned this great old photo I'd be chuffed
at the quality of the incoming restorations.
John - Thanks for the comments.
I had to take a photo of a candle to give me a hint
to add a glow.

Beautiful job! I’m still very new to this, and new to the site, so I’m hoping to learn from all here.

Hi Matt, i just noticed something that i didnt notice before, whether it was a conscious decision or not , your carpet has good pattern following perspective, from left to centre and from right to centre and mine does not !, good work once again, i must look out for those minor details that make all teh difference.!

Thanks for the comments Dave.
Nezbitten - I think I used free transform to improve the perspective of the pattern.
I didn't push too hard restoring the carpet because there were so many interesting features in this wonderful old photo.
I know what you mean about minor details.
I often work at night and submit my restorations at about 1 am.
After a nights sleep I look at my work with fresh eyes.
I always find things I have missed or should have done better.

This is so beautifully done.
I'm in awe.
I downloaded the original but I know I couldn't come close.
Great job!
