Hi everybody!

As a little girl I used to sit spellbound watching 'Cowboys movies'....well...it happened again working on Restoration Challenge #40....I know that in this case it was only a 'make-believe', but I enjoyed it anyway....so here is what I did with it:

1) I used the Channel Mixer to turn the image Black and White.

2) I run a light Filter->Noise->Dust&Scratches to remove the strongest noise.

3) I used the Patch Tool to repair the rest of the damage in the picture.

4) To enhance the image I added Color Dodge and Color Burn Layers (Alt+click on the New Layer icon, checking the option to fill with the corresponding neutral colours). I used a soft white or black brush (Opacity 5-10%) to paint over the details I wanted to enhance.

5) I selected and Layered via Copy, (Ctrl+J), a good part of the Cowboy's bearskin pants and moved it over the side of the pants lacking information, adjusting Opacity and deleting where unnecessary.

6) I cropped the image.

7) I duplicated the Layer and run a soft High Pass Filter (Radius 2.5, Blending set to Overlay), to sharpen the image a bit.

8) I applied a very light Sepia colour to the image.

9) I added a little Noise before converting to .JPG.

Thanks to Woody for the nice challenge and to you all.

Ciao, ciao....Flora.

I do the same thing when I'm working on photos. I become part of the picture and the people in it. My first thought on this fellow though was I wonder if he knew how fat those chaps make him look? OK, getting serious now. Fantastic job on this here cowboy!

Very, very nice restoration, Flora. I like the brightness level you have achieved as well as your attention to the "important" details. Growing new hair on his chaps solved that blow out problem once and for all.

DJ
..thank you very much for your great comment and also for teaching me a new english word: chaps....(at first I thought it was simply the plural of 'chap = boy', but finally the penny dropped!!!!

Tom
thank you very much for your great comment too....I only wish I could make real hair grow as easily as it can be done with PS....I'd, probably, be very rich by now.......

I get a little bored of keep saying "fabulous work again Flora" but in keeping with tradition "fabulous work again Flora" I like how you have added more detail to the chaps and the way you have handled the waistcoat, keeping the stripes intact was a toughie
