After reviewing all of the great entries on this challenge I decided to try to make some improvements from my original entry. The differences from by original entry are as follows:
1. Desaturated background to give more contrast between soldier and background. Applied 2pix blur.
2. Brightened whites of eyes and added highlights.
3. Adjusted brightness/contrast of soldier.
4. Added deeper tan flesh tones to face and neck and adjusted opacity.
5. Added deeper color to mouth.
6. Slight adjustment with unsharp mask.
I think this is better than my first try. Thanks for all of the tips in all of your descriptions.

Huge difference in your first. Which I might add wasn't bad at all. But you definately learned some tricks this time around and the results speak for themselves. Excellent job Jerry.

Thanks Ken & DJ I really liked this photo and wanted to give it another shot. I can really learn a lot from studying the other folks.
thanks

Very nice.
The only thing I could say by way of critique is:
1) The sleeve ends are too light, they're distracting (I cloned darker camo over them).
2) The hat pin, zipper, and buttons on his uniform should be another color. But that's kind of a subjective decision on my part.
