Although a long time PS user for editing my photographs this is my first attempt at restoration.

Steps:

- Removed Old Border
- Used Clone / Heal on New Layer for Sky Area
- Duplicated a tree section and used clone / heal for upper right corner on New Layer
- Used multiple curve layers with masks to correct the bright right hand side
- Merged to new Layer and used a combination of heal / clone and brush tools to remove the damage.
- Used Patch tool to duplicate and correct some textures in the restored areas
- Rebuilt left shoe
- Another curves layer to balance the image and restore details
- Dust and Scratches on New Layer
- Replace blank sky upper left with a sky image and faded to match image
- Channel Mixer to convert to B&W
- Selective Noise Reduction on new layer using a mask
- Sharpen using a mask to avaoid bringing out noise
- Dodge and Burn to even tones
- Applied new frame and resized

Not a bad restore. Definatly a great job for a first attempt.

One thing you might wish to watch for when doing this type of restore, around the new shoe, up that leg, and around the arm on the same side, there appears to be sort of a halo that makes the child look like he is not part of the picture. I know it seems to be a minor thing, but since it is so close to the focus of the photo, it really stands out.

Fine work on your first restoration Steve,
I like the way you have fixed the blown out areas on the jumper.

The ground and bushes in front of the fence are very dark.
I think this works well with this photo.
My eyes are drawn to the boy and not the ugly
and distracting ground around him.

Steve, It looks like a massive mountain range in the sky.
Somehow the clouds came out looking very streaky.

Matt

Thanks for the comments. I really appreciate them as they will help me further my skills in this type of work.

Dave - I can see the effect you are referring to. I think it's caused by me using a feathered selection to create the mask for one of my curve layers I used to darken the right side of the image. I'll watch that in the future.

Matt - The source image I used was of some whispy coulds as I thought it would be a subtler effect. I can see what you mean and perhaps should have chosen a different sky or made it a bit darker so it was more clear.

Cheers,
Steve
