Used a mask based on the blue channel to help clone out the big colored blotches (just for the fun of it - don't think it really saved any time), then cleaned up other blemishes using a combination of clone, patch, and healing.

Next came channel mixer conversion to gray scale followed by curves to enhance tone and contrast. Then a merge visible. Duplicated that layer and used dust and scratches to get rid of the three million black dots. Added a layer mask to the D&S layer and excluded the things I didn't want softened with a black paintbrush.

Next thing was to use Ro's quick degrunge technique to smooth out the facial skin and background. Lowered opacity on that layer to about 30% to keep the face from being over-smoothed.

Carole

Merged visible again, sepia-toned it, and added a modest high-pass sharpen layer. That's it.

Yours has an almost painterly feel. The more I look, the more I want to see the colors you might have if it was done as a watercolor rather than sepia. In other words, I see lots of very creative possibilities.

Thanks, Janet. Your opinion counts a lot for me. And you've thrown me a challenge that can't be ignored - though I want to see your version too.

Good work Carole,
I think Janets watercolor suggestion is a good one.
I also love the look of hand tinted portaits from this era.
