Challenge #45 'My Face”
I want to thank you Doug Nelson and Pam Schwartz for making this image available in 2001for us to practice our retouching skills with. The model requested a glamour image created on her picture. Here’s my experience working on this picture. (Please be aware there will be some steps forgotten or missed in my description.)
In the process of working on this portrait I’ve backtracked and deleted layers that did not work for me. It took me approximately a day to retouch and 29 layers later here it is.
When I reviewed the image I saw that the image was dark and needed to be brighter. I also noted that the left side can be reworked so that it enhanced instead of being a distraction.
- I found the white cloth on her arm to be the distracting element so I darken it completely as well as any wisp of stray hair using a black color fill with mask.
- I added hair to her face on the left side near her eye by duplicating from the bottom on that side and masking it in. I also liquidfy the hair section to follow the flow of the orginal hair on that side.
- Her hair has been made more shinny and more red with global levels and curves layer that brighten the image.
- I have never used makeup in my life. Creating virtual makeup was a challenge for me. I created my lipstick by first selecting the lips and painting in red color in color paint mode. I added another layer painting in normal mode. Later on I had emphasize the lips more, painting in red color, (normal), on my 50% gray fill layer, which I touchup the face by dodging, mostly, and burning some hair strands.
- I painted in green color on the eye lids in color mode as well as brought the opacity down to around 51% opacity.
- I tried to paint in color the cheeks for the makeup but that didn’t work. So I copy the image from the retouch layer(D&B,Clone), and change it’s blending mode Red photo filter around 75%. I masked it and painted in for gradual buildup and change the layer opacity to around 51%.
- I cleaned up the right brow by adding hair in the brow, painting it and the layer was put in overlay mode at 93% opacity. I also shorten the length by cloning up the brow.
- I also painted the lashes and changed the blending mode to Multiply.
I hope I have covered all the major points on this retouched image I worked on. Enjoy!
Elizabeth
