With the Black and White feature in Photoshop's CS3, making a black and white image out of a color image is so much easier than using the channel mixer. I wanted to see what it would do with this challenge.
It did fine to a point. What I ended up doing was a lot of masking for certain areas to get the look I wanted. After using the BW feature with the knockouts and masking, I ended up selecting certain parts of the picture and using curves adjustment layers to achieve a higher contrast. Dodge and burn was last in the arsenal for this picture.
One last problem that was the fault of having a lower resolution photo had me selecting the sky, adding noise and giving it a slight Gaussian blur to reduce the awful pixelation.

On a second and third look, I should have darkened the sky more. It is a bit too bright and leads the eye right out of the picture. Oh well, live and learn.
