Hi, this is my first post here, I hope it's alright that I'm kind of digging up an old thread.
The first thing I did with this was bring it in to Photoshop and convert it to CMYK mode, and worked used the Cyan channel to eliminate the over-saturated areas. Then I created a new blank layer and with the clone tool (I use photoshop 6 witch doesn't have a healing brush) set to "use all layers" began fixing up the scratches and tears. I also used the "Dust & Scratches" filter in a few areas.
After that, I started filling in the missing areas of the picture. For the most part I used the clone tool or just copied and pasted from other parts of the image. Then I colored the image by adding a Color Balance adjustment layer for every object I wanted to color and then masking off the areas I didn't want to be affected. This makes it easier for me to add color reflections, like the way the color of the skin reflects off of the dress around her hands.
Finally I added some glow around the flame of the candle by using the Dodge tool on the "Shadows" setting with a very large soft brush.

You did an excellent job, period!
You take a lot of notice in detail, thats important.
You have a lot of talent; just imagine the possibilities if you start using Photoshop CS3.
Good work!
Jeff

Thanks for the compliments! I haven't been here for a while, it's nice to see some more people have commented. I've recently acquired an excessive amount of free time (just moved to a new town and am looking for a new job) so hopefully I'll be able to work on some more of these challenges soon.
