I wasn't at all happy with my original version. That, and I wanted to revisit this image now that there's some more experience under my belt (also an upgrade from Photoshop 7 to CS3). So here's the new one.

Got the colors close with levels adjustment, duplicated the layer, then used Noise Ninja on each channel separately. A blend-if adjustment limited the smoothing to superboy, leaving the background greenery relatively crisp. This was followed by curves to set black and white, and targeted curves to set skin and hair tones. A selective color adjustment layer took care of the light-fading discoloration. Then I added an empty soft light curves adjustment layer at 35% opacity to add a little zip.

After all of this, a new merge visible layer made the base for fixing the cracks and other flaws. Mostly used the patch tool. Duplicated that layer, set the blending mode to multiply, and added a hide-all layer mask. Painted down the sides of the mask with a big soft white brush and adjusted opacity to even out the fading, mostly. Finished darkening the lighter edges with a soft light burn layer. Last step was high-pass sharpening layer with superboy's cape and shoes masked out.
