This was a long process. I ended up using the cutout filter, then layering it with some coloured pencil filter layers, edges layers etc. I cut out most of the original foliage and replaced it with a photo of pine needles (also with the cutout filter applied) and a clip art flower. This way I was able to layer the foliage background and get a more Audubon (I thought) setting for the bird than just erasing bits of the photo.
Then I put in the text, added some texture to the 'paper', darkened the edges and put in some foxing as if it was an old print.
