I switched to LAB mode and applied a curve to the A channel. Then I used the Blend If sliders to tailor the effect. That took care of most of the work. After that, I did a little selective sharpening and coloring and blurred the background to make the couple stand out more from the background.

Thanks! I'm trying to work my way through Photoshop LAB Color: The Canyon Conundrum and Other Adventures in the Most Powerful Colorspace by Dan Margulis. It's a bit of a tough slog, but it's a great resource to learn more about LAB!
