Started by converting the image to grayscale to simplify removal of cracks & scratches. Used a combination of cloning tool, dodge and burn technique and dust & scratches filters to remove damage. After the damage was removed I placed the original colored version on a layer beneath a of the grayscale restored version and set the blend mode of the restored version to "Luminosity" to let the original colors show through. Then I corrected the color in areas where the original image had been damaged using just the brush tool on color mode.
The idea of this process is to separate the two basic phases of image restoration (damage removal and color correction) by removing damage from a grayscale version then adding color back in and fixing the color. I find I get much better results by focusing on one aspect of the restoration at a time instead of trying to do both at once.

ooh good idea, Im definitely going to give that technique a go.
I notice you took the badge out of the oldest boys shirt and wonder if that was purposeful?
