Submitted by Jeff Guay (jeffg64):

"It is a photo from a good friend, the photo is the only picture of his great grandfather on the left. As you can see the photo is fading away to total darkness. He showed it to me and I thought this would be an excellent challenge. It certainly may be one of the oldest challenge photos yet. I have been given full permission to use this photo in the challenge. Can anyone bring great granddad out of the darkness along with the rest of the family?"

Challenge: Restore this photo. Description mandatory

Do your best to restore "Fading Into Darkness", and post the results here using the following guidelines:
  • Make sure you're using the largest version of the Challenge photo
  • Enter your name in "Enter a title for the photo"
  • Enter the Challenge type and number in "Descriptive Keywords" (ie: "Photo-Art Challenge #501" or "Manipulation Challenge #132"
  • Include a complete description of the steps you used under "Photo Description". (You might want to write it elsewhere and paste it here)
  • Attach your file as an 800 pixel wide JPG file, compressed so that the overall file is under 200k (this usually means 60% compression).
  • Make sure you post to the correct Challenge
  • If you expect any comments for your entry, offer your comments to other entries

As always, there are no winners, no losers, no prizes, only a sharing and learning opportunity for everyone.

How you restore and how much you restore is up to you, as long as you fulfill the Challenge. Have fun, and good luck!

NOTE: As is the case for ALL RetouchPRO Challenges, there is NO expiration date on this Challenge. Even after other Challenges go up, feel free to upload your version

If you have an image you'd like to submit for a Challenge, read the FAQ (link up in the navbar)

Fascinating. I look at it every other day in the hope that some one has met the challenge. The photo appears to be badly silvered. Was it scanned or did you photograph it?

John, I scanned it. It is badly silvered. I've been working on it myself at this end, a slow process.

Hi Jeff,
I have been reading up on how to deal with silvering and there are some very useful tips in this forum, especially the one which describes the process of re-photographing the original image with a digital camera and cross polarizing light. That-is two studio lights with polarizing filters and a polarizing filter on the camera. I found it by searching using the word "Silvering".
Best of luck, I lookforward to the results.

Where exactly do I post my challenge #104? I cannot find the location to do so.

I like what has been done to this photo so far here. There was alot of work to do on it.
