1. Manually extract baby from background
2. Clean baby with healing & clone brushes (could have done a little more work here)
3. Adjust levels (a little darker than Auto)
4. Dodge and burn highlights and shadows for detail and depth
5. Create gradient background and vignetted light-circle
6. Add noise to background
7. Merge and convert to Tritone

The repairs are good as is the brightness. The circle of light is great!
I don't know about adding the noise, though. Or maybe...softer noise?

Great job with the baby...you cleaned it well, repaired the hand and brought the contrast up. I'm not crazy about the background though. It's a bit too clean and really destroys the original "tintype" look and feel.

Yeah, I thought the background was pretty lame after I uploaded it too. Obviously, sometimes it's best to just leave well enough alone. I may try reworking the background later whenever I can swing another extended lunch break.

Good touch adding noise to the background to better fit with the grainy image of the baby. I think you handled this one very well.

I do like the circle of light for the seat. Great ideal! And the eyes are great.

I really like how the baby has more contrast and stands out. The grain seems a little overpowering though...

The circle of light and the resulting shadows are really nicely done, as is the clean-up on the baby. I'm one who likes the background to be cleaned up more than some other folks, but this is probably "too cleaned up" even for me (smile). The noise is too high on the baby's skin -- I expect to see smoooooth skin on babies.

Nice work on the baby - esp. the eyes and face. The original is heavily textured so I understand the grain you left. Hands are a bit unnatural. Would have preferred to see the original background restored.

I think this is a nice retouch job. Looks clean, crisp. natural and real. The background was hard for me as well as many people, but I think you came up with a great looking background that looks like it could belong.

I don't think this challenge could have been handled better. This is fabulous. I love the shadows for the feet. It totally grounds it in reality. I may delete my submission now!
