Used an FFT filter to remove the pattern. Decomposed to RGB layers and adjusted each layer. Used some of the green and blue layers to try to rebuild the red layer, then recomposed. This only brought back some of the colour detail, so I had to do a colourisation by creating blue, red and gold layers with masks and carefully painting in/out to try to get realistic colours.
Then did the repair parts using lots of cloning to repair the damaged areas.
