Converted to greyscale, adjusted curves to bring out detail in faces. Used healing brush at pixel level to clean faces and clothes. Gave boy new haircut as there wasn't enough detail in original. Decided to re-draw all wooden walls, the steps and broom handle in background rather clean original (it'd take me forever!), added fake grain to the re-drawn stuff to help it blend in and look natural and then finally tinted using a colour sample from the orig. I like how it still looks slightly faded.
