My first contribution was in the modern Goth genre, but I also wanted to do something more in the romantic tradition and more towards a painting.
So suddenly I got the idea with the moon as a skull or the skull as a moon. And I thought it would be nice with some trees. The kind of trees that live their life in the forest that lies between night and day, life and death, consciousness and dream.
I knew what to do with the skull so I started with the trees. I made a couple in the landscape program Bryce, exported them to Photoshop, applied some paint effects and made the image real dark.
Then I made the moon with Flaming Pears fantastic Lunar Cell filter. Put the skull in front of it and changed it to better fit. I´ve actually forgot which layer mode I used to mix the skull and moon together.
Now I wanted the moon to show up behind the trees so I put it behind the forest image which I made some duplicates of.
With some opacity I then erased the areas at the top layer that was directly over the moon, leaving the branches intact. Then I cropped the image to a more interesting format.

Inspired (and very creepy) idea. I'm going to check the moon tonight just to make sure it hasn't "gone goth".

Very Creepy, but nice. I agree with G. Couch...the man in the moon now has a new meaning.
