Try to imagine . . . It’s late Halloween night; it will be morning soon. You are walking along a small pond, opposite a very old graveyard. It’s quite cold, and damp, everything is unusually quiet. You happen to notice some movement on the other side. You soon realize what is happening is not exactly normal. It seems some type of ritual is being performed. Fortunately, you have your trusty camera. Getting as close to the shoreline as possible, you snap a picture, the noise from your shutter is heard. You’ve been discovered . . . whatever they are, they’re coming for you.

I apologize for this somewhat brief description (so I thought I’d make up for it with a “bad” short story).

I used several images that I shot recently. Like the Gothic challenge, it was “add what you may as you proceed”. The base pictures were actually taken in the early morning hours, so I attempted to keep that idea intact. The impending sunrise was also an actual photograph taken that same morning, so I had little to do other than blend the two together. To keep the late night / early morning look, I did not use curves or levels like you would normally do. I adjusted what I thought was appropriate for the mood I was trying to convey. I added some fog for effect. Brushing in an opacity of about 15 %

Some of the filters that I used were flood, Nik classical & design filters. Again, I did not keep track of most of what I did, but I will try to do better in the future.

Hey!...you should have kept the old one up as well!

imho, I think this is a stronger image now...The emphasis is now on the figures in the lower right. Compositionally your eye is no longer being pulled in two directions. For me anyway, this makes the image much more subtle and mysterious...it feels almost "literary".

I can imagine myself standing on the shore and seeing this scene...as one figure looks up at me. Needless to say, it would scare the life out of me! Before, that feeling was somewhat in conflict with the figures and shapes flying around the sky.

Oh...and anyone else viewing this should really look at the larger version! You did a wonderful job of combining images!

Actually, this "is" more like the original version I had in mind Initially I thought it may be perceived as being somewhat empty, so I directed the theme with the much younger generation in mind (witches, ghosts, bats etc). It was after reading your comments that I decided to post this one (because I happen to agree with you). Thanks for sharing your thoughts

Oh, you took the skull out of the clouds. It was my favorite part.

You drag yourself out of bed early one morning and decide to go out and enjoy the changing of the leaves and what do you stumble across, but some shady images in dark robes carrying a coffin and being followed by a wolf. This is when you realize you should have stayed in bed under the warmth and safety of your blankets. Great image and great story description!
