:wavey: Hi Elle, I did wonder about you with Painter and your tablet. Sorry to hear it hasn't worked out for you. Maybe the "time" just isn't right and we all get into a comfort zone using the same tried and true software programs.
I'm like that with PaintShopPro which I've been using for years since there shareware version 3.

Neve i have been using psp7 for years and i always go back to it, i like photoshop but not as much as Paint Shop Pro, but the tablet it just drove me mad, the curser was everywhere i just don't have the patience i thought i had, but hey it wasn't a wacom maybe there is a different getting a cheaper one. Well one day i might go to the wacom site and get one of them 2nds.

Hi Neve,

I first straightened the horizon, and then duplicated the Layer.

From the top Layer I created 3 square Selections to become the sides of my cube and used the Transform command to assemble them. I applied Levels to modify the brightness and so give it more dimension. Finally I used the Outer Glow setting.

The next Layer I just lightly adjusted the Levels to modify the exposure to my liking. I then created a mask for this Layer.

In the mask I used the Gradient tool with the Grey Levels Gradient selected in Normal Mode. I held down the Shift key to make sure my line was perfectly horizontal. I then changed the Blend Mode to “Difference” and drew a line from top to bottom again holding down the Shift key. Over the resulting checkerboard I then ran the Paint Daubs filter and played with the settings until I got a result I liked. I also used the Liquify filter to modify the grid just "Below" the cube

On the bottom i.e. Background Layer I applied the Glowing Lines filter and played with the blend modes until I was happy with the result. I also applied the Levels command to the mask to modify it a bit further.

Hope you like the result.

Regards

Con

Neve, this is a great photo to play with. I was going for a water color-y look and used the Art History Brush in Photoshop, also USM and some color saturation.

Had a quick go in Painter, the horizon's not as straight as it should be. Used Den's Oil Brushes with Funky Chunky to block it all in first. Image was cropped and I didn't put back all the boats. Added some surface texture too.

Elle, yours is lovely! Coy, wow, very creative indeed! Catherine, yours is marvellous as usual!! Hi Neve, the texture's very nice. Must try Den's famous brush sometime.
I'm afraid i went OVERBOARD with the colors!!! Did this in painter8 with one of my modified (oilpaint) brushes.

I liked the colours in this one, so threw the kitchen sink at it ( everything ) and come up with this.
