I have a friend who has been trying to get me to move to New Mexico, she sent me this picture as an enticement.

I thought it would be fun to see what you folks could do with it.

I achieved my results by using the Art History brush, charcoals by Ro in Photoshop, then I brought it into Painter and used the Impasto clone brush, different sizes, different opacities, on several different layers with different blending modes. Finally it was back to Photoshop for the texture.

You can get the high resolution images here:

Have fun!

I love the photo. I used Photoshop to make a background, sandstone texture. I added a layer style set to emboss, and painted cracks and chips into the layer. I ran artistic filters on the photo, and then used blending modes until it looked right. I roughed up the edges and adjusted the color.

That is SWEET Cathy! Looks like seashells added which, given the desert clime is very sublime.
I simplified by using Dave's Infrared action followed by multiple actions of Simplifier. Added just a hint of sepia.

cheers

Thanks Dave. The carvings are actually native american symbols, but I guess they look like shells. I love the hand drawn feel of your work.

very nice, both of you :)

cathy, yours reminds me of those picture postcards that were done on a more absorbant paper, almost a construction paper. very nice!

where duv's reminds me of a cartoon strip type pen and pencil. also good.

Cathy -- I have started looking for your work because I like it so much -- I really like this version also!

Elleth, I love this image, and love Pueblo/adobe architecture.

I used several color choices from the image with the Sketch->Notepaper filter from PShop.

Did a little overlay painting in Painter. In Photoshop simplified, and on separate layers a dry brush filter and a watercolor. Blends.

What character this adobe building has!

I did some subtile and not so subtile things to this picture. Using various selection methods I isolated light adobe, dark adobe, snow, rocks, sky, window with shutter and door, sky and the fur tree in the background (above the roof line) on separate layers.

I applied various textures and filters to the different layer elements. For example, I used a focus blur on the fur tree, added some grunge to the window & door elements, applied different textures to both the light and dark adobe. Added texture to the rocks and a slight bevel.

I also toned down the blue in the sky (it was too bright with all the other changes).

I've had time to play today!!! :-)

Applied pastel colors, Impressionist brush strokes, and adjusted contrast.

Steve, good job in applying the pastels, but it looks "flat" to me. Perhaps some paper texture? It's like it needs something to add debth of field.

Thanks for the nice comments C.J.

Kiska, Swampy and Steve, very nice work. I love the different looks each one has.

This is a great picture. It would look good in National Geographic and really doesn't need any manipulation, but if we are asked to rework it, then to my mind's eye it needs to be "roughed up". There are a lot of texture possiblities in the adobe, wood, stone, etc. JMHO.

OK for all you texture fans, here's another go at this one.

Great, Steve! :-)

In "real life" paint (charcoal, pencil etc.) is applied to a surface and the surface has texture. I guess this is why I just expect to see some texture in a "painted" piece. Not that you have to apply texture, or apply it to the entire piece. I think it just helps define "painted" and "photo". :-)

Tried high pass sharpening here.

Any better depth?

I've taken the liberty Steve to put your original beside the sharpened rendition. Personally, I think the sharpened one has more depth, snap and sense of detail but retains the wonderful colors in the house and sky.

I like them both ok. But I can also see the difference, and what you saw lacking.

I wouldn't be hesitant about going with either technique on future images. Would, of course, depend on the image I was working with.

Appreciate all the input.

We just love New Mexico when we can get there. I just found this one after finally reading some of my email. Here is my trial To many steps for my brain to recall, and have my history settings at only 30 steps, so............... :hat:

I went to upload my file and forgot where I saved it. Talk about a poor memory. So I made another variation. Here they both are.

Totally PSCS
