Does anyone know a "recipe" for a down-and-dirty platinum toning technique?
I know sepia, etc... but every time I try platinum, I seem to be a little off in quality and am not convinced. I would like to try it in my present system, (photshop 7) but if you know a really (really) good plug in...

Maybe it can help you, otherwise, what exactly do you mean saying "platinum effect"?

Both Photokit and Powerretouche include platinum toning settings. If you were to post a link to a platinum print with the look you're after we might be able to give you some settings advice.

Adobe Studio Exchange has a set of gradient maps including a platinum simulation here (http://share.studio.adobe.com/axAssetDetailSubmit.asp?aID=10279&back=http://share.studio.adobe.com/axBrowseSubmit.asp?r=0&t=13&pgsel1=2).

Another popular method is to add a layer filled with R153 G102 B51 at 20% opacity then a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer with +20 on Contrast.

You could also do it using the Mode/Duotone -> Quadtones option, although I don't know of any particular settings -- once you'd worked them out you could save the quadtone settings and apply them easily.

How useful all this is depends on your printing. If you are taking it seriously there is a whole field of specialist warm and cool grey inks and curves for printers that you could get into.

Hmmm... playing around, here's a first try at a platinum quadtone setting (attached). I'm sure someone can improve upon it.

I was referring to platinum toning, not effects. Is is a type of Black and White photographic printing, which has a warm hue due to the platinum salts used in lieu of silver. But thanks for the link... I always like learning something new.

Don't know exactly what you are looking for but you might try Virtual Photographer plugin (google it).
