View Full Version : script to capture layer names...

Has anyone ever heard of a script that takes the names of all the layers and layer sets and puts them in a text file (or something else that would let me take it elsewhere, like a text layer or clipboard)?

Scripting is a little over my head, but such capability would be quite useful to me. Anyone seen this?

Hi there, Russell - wlecome to RetouchPRO :bigthmb: :bigthmb:

This layer thing shouldn't be too difficult.
Assuming that you are using Photoshop - which version do you have? 7, CS(2)?

(scripts aren't compatible between 7 and CS)

I'm currently using CS 1.

I know that if I were only interested in the names of layers, I could output each layer as a file using a script or ImageReady, and just copy the names in the list of files in the destination folder (OSX), but I need the layer set names as well. Having the names of the layers indented under the names of the layer sets would be a bonus.

OK - should be interesting. I've got it sketched out, try and finish it tonight.

I have 7.0 and CS2. I believe CS2 is pretty compatible with CS1 - we'll soon find out!

This is what I've got so far.

Got a bit detoured into doing a general layers print-out, and haven't done the Layers Sets yet.
There's an example textfile in the zip.

Hey, nice work!

The script worked great so far. The file I tried it on contained 67 layer sets, all of which were labeled neatly in the resulting text file. I'm anxious to see it work with the layers within the sets. Thanks!

Russell

Photoshop - nice touch denoting the blending modes :)

Glad you approved. :) ... and also relieved that CS1 and CS2 are compatible.

The Layer Sets are going to need some sort of recursive programming - to avoid having to write a new bit of program for each level.
Going to be an interesting challenge.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the nested layer sets limited to 5 set deep? Has this changed in CS2?

dbdbdbdb , I think the problem is at your end. Try again.
I downloaded without problems.
