I have been contracted by a major religious group to draw welts on a few guy's backs. Like the whippings they took for punishment in the first century. The art director said "make them look as brutal as possible".

All my welts thus far look like they were being punished with lipstick.

Does anyone have any suggestions about how to make real looking welts on skin? I'm stumbling here.

Please don't suggest I beat on of my neighbors with a garden hose, take a picture of him and then follow up with the stamp tool. I've already thought of that.

Thanks. Double thanks if you know how.

Post a picture of the guy's backs you want the weals on, and I'm sure someone will have a go.

dallas,

welcome to RetouchPRO.

you do realize that being punished by lipstick can be pretty brutal, right? ;)

like gary said, post some pics, including your own attemps. you might also try a google image search and see if you cant find some examples to copy and learn from.

Just lift the welts off real photos..

the "Transform" tool has some useful modes when you right click inside the area involved in the transform that may aid in blending them in.

Use the displacement feature in Potoshop maybe? I tried something similar to the attached image in photoshop but failed. The wrinkles and cut are exaggerated to drive home a point in another discussion forum. The image was done in Curious labs Poser I had a gray scale image of the color texture used on this model. I added wrinkles and I also added the deep cut on the face. I also painted a red streak on the color image. Rather than load the grayscal as a"bump map" which in 3D only gives the illusion of hills and valleys in an image. I used Posers displacement feature where it actually deforms the 3D mech object. So, if these are still images you are working with, you could get your hands on Poser, Pose the 3D figure similarly to your photographed subjects, apply any grayscale hieght map/ bump map to the displacemtn feature, render it and then blend 3D welts onto your photographed subjects.
