For some strange reason, my brush cursor occasionally disappears while working on an image. The only way to restore it is to reboot the computer. Am I accidentally bumping some secret key? Has this happened to anyone else?

That usually happens to me in the midst of a high-detail lasso selection :depressed. I only wish I could blame it on someone else.

When Photoshop is doing things wierd, it's usually because the preference file has got corrupted, its almost always worth clearing it out.

To clear it, close Photoshop, then on re-launch press Ctrl+Shift+Alt Photoshop will ask if you if its OK to delete your preference file, click OK.

Photoshop creates a new preference file automatically.

The thing is you'll have lost all your preferences. Because of this, its always worth keeping a good copy of your preference file, Then once your file has been cleared, and the problem resolved, you can re-instate your preferences.

interesting. you dont happen to know if that works for Paint Shop Pro too do you? i've got a bit of weird lately with it. getting some crashes lately, especially when using clone or retouch tools for long periods. i've also added a lot of plugins in the last month or two. do the plugins get pre-loaded with these programs and therefore eat a bit of ram? cause it seems like i'm running out of ram more these days and the program may be crashing because of swap file use or something closely related.

thanks gary. i think this computer is getting too slow for me anyways. about time for an upgrade to something else, i'm thinking. and then there's the upgrade to Paint Shop Pro 9 and i need corel painter, and pscs, and a new car, and a new house.... ;)
