Get that glossy mens mag look without the barbie doll effect.
Tutorial uses Photoshop CS but should work with at least PS 6+
In fact you should be able to follow along with any image software that has layers, some kind of blurring, brush opacity and layer effects (overlay and soft light) - so nothing too advanced [details (http://www.retouchpro.com/tutorials/?m=show&id=191)]

I accidentally forgot to change category from restoration to retouching... any chance a mod could move it?

Very impressive tutorial, Nancy. Well thought out with great illustrations. Thanks for all your efforts.

Would you be OK if I used the (cropped) final result in the Photo-based Art forum? It would make a basis a lovely painting or sketch effect.

Ofcourse, I'd love to see what you do with it.

Great tutorial! The techniques are useful and well explained.

There's no step five. I assume it's not missing, just misnumbered.

I know I'm in the minority, but I prefer step four for drop dead gorgeous. Mind you, I know I have to go to the other steps to produce images for the majority tastes.

Nancy

Thanks for the tutorial which I have just worked though.

Can you please clarify a point.
Step3 Blur. Should I use Uniform, Gaussian or monochromatic?

Also a couple of small mistakes
Step 6 Create is spelt wrong
Step 8 Create a new layer and fill it with 50% You have missed the word Grey

Thanks again the results look great.

The noise very much depends on the image you're working with - particularly if it is a scan rather than a digital image. The point is to match the grain of the image as best as possible. With a very high res digital image very little noise is needed, especially when the transparency of the painted layer is lowered to bring texture through from the underlying layer.

BTW thanks for the spots on those errors, i've fixed them now :)

Great tutorial! Thank you so much for posting!

Here is my finished product, before and after, its the FIRST EVER picture I have been brave enough to try and edit. I have Photoshop Elements 5.0 so I dont think I have Masks, or if I do I cant find them.

It would be great if the skin tone is not too orange. But overall i think is a very good technique to practise.

I see orange people.

 LMAO

The tutorial is great though and I would suspect that the end colour would be a personal preference and also changeable. I prefer the image ended at step 4, but that is my prefered look.

Hey! I've been using this exact method for several months. It's been good to me... but I've never quite gotten step 7 (about filling the layer with 50% grey) I'm not sure what that means or how to do it... could you be more specific for a newbie!!! Thanks. Awesome tutorial!

Create a new layer, change mode to softlight, and then check the fill with 50% gray box.
