My question is about b&w/grayscale, but I'm curious how I might get rid of the purple?

I started by assigning adobe rgb and used lab color > new doc > grayscale. Applied a curves, levels and contrast adj layer. (not worried about cleanup right now) Is there an approach I might take that would give me better results? Can anyone suggest sites that have b&w tips/tricks/how-to's for photoshop 7?
