I have a photo of a house that I would like to make into a background with about a 20% opacity for use in print. On top of this will be three inserts of other views of the house/property.. I have run through the gamut of commands, and the Adobe PhotoShop Mac forums, but have not been able to find anything that tells me how to change my image's opacity. Surely there must be a way, or am I just imagining?

Rename the background layer to unlock it, add a new layer, fill with white and move below the original image. Use the opacity slider to change the opacity of the original image.

Not sure if I have understood your question correctly or not, but to change the opacity of a layer, simply drag the slider on the layers palette for that layer down to your preferred level.

Just for the sake of clarification, the image has to be on it own layer, and not on the background layer.
