hi all...this is my first attempt at colorizing a b&w photo...
how does it look? any suggestions on how to improve it
would be much appreciated...thanks.

the skin, clothing and hair look good, but the green of the background looks a bit pale to me. the girl's face seems a bit far in the background or a bit blurry, though. maybe a crop or sharpening to bring her out more.

overall, a very nice job.

Gee, my first attempt was nothing like this good!

My only comment is that I think you need a bit more color variation in the hair and the skin. Both seem a little flat to me. If you look at color photos (someone suggested sampling a picture of a face in different spots with the eyedropper to see the variations) skin and hair both have a variety of colors in them. I would add more highlights to the hair and more color to the skin, especially in the face. I would add a tad more color to the lips too.

But overall, a great job!

I'm not a colorization expert but it looks good to me. I might suggest a S Curve adjustment to make the image "pop" a little more.

Using hue/saturation with colorization has a tendency to make all of the values the same hue (i knew those college terminologies would be useful some day :happy: ) A way to avoid this is after using hue/saturation, use color balance. You will notice in color balance there are selections for shadow, midtones, and highlight. These are actually selections for the values. Selectiing these different values will give you some variety of hue in your image.

For example you could select the bush and then select "shadows" in the color balance adjustment. Then by making your color adjustments you will have control over the dark green areas of your bush.

Just saw your work. I think it is very good, it just needs some minimum adjustments. I would suggest a bit more of green and a bit less of blue on the green back ground. ando you could do the following to improve contrast:

- make a copy of your image

- remove all saturation

- put it on overlay mode with about 30% opacity

after this make another copy of your image:

apply a high pass of 6 pixels ratio

open the levels histograms and move the black and white sliders until your mid tone (gray) slider is in the middle of the histrgram's graphic.

put this layer in overlay and adjust its oppacity to the ammount of sharpening you want ( I suggest 30% oppacity).
