In regards to my post in patrickb's thread, I've updated photoshop 7 to CS2. I'm curious if the previous versions of photoshop (5.0, 5.5, 6, 7) need to remain on the hard drive. They sure take up some space. Ive searched the topic here but came up empty so I hope this is not a popular repeat.

There is no need to keep old versions. Although, before doing away with PS 7 you'll have to make sure you've transferred all your "add-ons" and "plug-ins" to the equivalent CS folders.

Unlike some other programs, there is nothing that PS 7 could do that CS2 can not (please correct me if I'm wrong), so no need to keep it.

Well, that's except if you do scripting. PS 7 scripts are not compatible with CS - and that's why I have both PS7 and CS2 installed.

Also be prepared - some actions that ran in PS 7 may behave slightly different and need some adjustment in CS2 (basically in merges and when switching between documents).

sinope .. i've done the same and found that in the past ... after I have installed the upgrade ... I have been able to delete the previous version .. (This is under Windows XP machine)

I havent downloaded or used any add-ons/plugins nor do I do any scripting so I think I'm ok there. However, I don't see a photoshop 5 uninstall in add/remove programs (windows xp) and I just hate to delete the folder without going the proper route. I have found a c:\program files\adobe\photoshop 5.0\Uninst.dll.

I may go back to ps7 so I'll hang on to it. This CS2 version is slow for me even after disabling some plugins, setting the primary scratch to another physical drive, setting the cache etc.

And this probably doesn't help ... (don't laugh)

I'm not laughing, my configuration is similar.

Seeing as you don't seem to be pushing PS to the limits, maybe you should do what I do - use PS 7 for the simple stuff and use CS 2 only as needed.

For basic pixel-pushing the differences are slight, I'd say that the big plus for basic retouching in CS 2 is the use of the clone stamp in the perspective view which gives you a preview os the result.

Good Idea on keeping 7, I think I'll take your advice and use it as you do (i'm having one of those v8 moments).

I was able to find the ps5 uninstall and ran it successfully. I did run into the "would you like to keep this shared file ..." Since it stated that leaving them on your computer could do no harm, I have left them for now (packed in a zip file and restarted to see if ps7/CS2 would give me trouble, and it has not).

Curious to know if you (or anyone reading this) kept them. It's not much space, but if theyre not needed ....

PS7 can scan money. CS or CS2 will not (at least US and European currency). So, if you have a need to scan currency for use in your images, then you'll want to keep PS7 around.

I'm am sorry to say that it is. I often need to create images for budget presentations, etc. for my employer. I was rudely surprised when I tried to scan some money images when I first upgraded to CS when it came out. There was a big tado about it on the Photoshop User to User forums. It made a lot of people angry.
