Well that's not exactly what I had in mind. I don't think I explained it to well in my first post.
I'm doing a job at the moment, which I have had to take a lot of artistic licence; I am doing a slideshow, which will be put onto DVD. One section includes a lot of photographs of the New South Wales Fire Brigade, which were taken around 1890 – 1900. I have taken photos of a fireman dressed in period uniform and used the old photos as backdrops. The intention was to give the feeling of a silent move. What I was after was the flowery designs they used in silent movie slides, which told the audience, what the story was about. They were usually text on a black background with a fancy border.

I hope this explanation is not to confusing.

You should try the font Woodtype Ornaments. You can build a pretty good background using those.

If you want to look on th einternet you can try using the keyword "Intertitles" It's the technical name for what you're looking for. You may be able to find some examples and make your own based on those.

Not sure about where you'd get them, but they were known as title cards.

Thanks for that goose443, Intertitles is exactly what I'm after. I even found the font Silentino gives the right feel to the text. Also Woodtype Ornaments will make great borders. I think this might do the trick.

you might also try using edges. there are numerous free ones out there. i think harry's filters includes some, for example. you take an edge and your image, pick 'arithmetic' with the setting 'darkest' and simply combine the edge with the picture. and, one of the nice things about edges is, you can make them yourself and keep them on hand.
