How do I go about feathering one image into another?

I have image #1 with a small, empty area.

I have taken another image - image #2 - desaturated it, changed it to an embossed image, reduced it in size to fit the small, empty area in image #1 and placed it appropriately on another Layer. I then manouvered it to where I wanted it over image #1 and erased to fit as needed.

Now, how do I go about feathering out the edges of the small embossed image #2 so that it feathers into the small empty space in image #1?

hi cj max,

there's lots of ways to feather, or to simulate it. but, the best way would probably depend on your two images. so, without an image to see, it's a bit hard to say exactly.

nonetheless, you can feather with the smudge or push tool, clone the two sides together, erase with a low opacity and fill, make a new blank raster layer and paint a blending in, airbrush a feather, and probably some others i'm not thinking of currently.

so, take your choice. if you care to post the image, i'm sure someone can give you more exact advice.

The problem with posting the image is that I'm working on it in TIFF 16-bit. That doesn't convert into JPEG easily to post.

I did come up with something that worked nicely. I took the inset photo, reduced its size via Image/Image Size and used the Eraser Tool to trim it precisely into the space, Desaturated, went to Filters/Stylize/Emboss with a 5 pixel off-set, reduced Opacity to 10% and used Edit/Transform to position it. I did use the Eraser Tool at 20% to "feather" in one part. Actually I ended up doing 6 of these in different locations. Each one was a different image.

I printed out a color 8x10 which is really too small for this subject. I'm going to figure out where I want to upsize it to and let Costco print it for me. I'm going to enter it into next month's local Art Association judging. The concept is something that has been in the back of my mind for about 8 months. I just never quite "knew" what I wanted until today...
