I recently received an attachment with .max file extension which would not open for me. After an internet search I found it could be opened with Scansoft's Paperport software. I downloaded the software and sucessfully opened and printed the attachment.

However, that's all I can do with it. I can't edit the image, copy it, convert it or anything else. My only recourse is to rescan this low resolution and somewhat blurry image.

My request that the sender rescan and save the file as a jpeg resulted in another .max image. I think the sender is not very knowledgeable about image files.

Any ideas for converting the .max image to something that is workable? Thanks for help anyone might be able to give.

Pretty sure the full product supports export of individual items however the viewer probably does not.

This page (http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=34514) has some options. But like Cassidy said, it seems that only the full version will convert to jpg.

I'll snoop around some more, though.

you might try something like Irfanview. it handles tons of extensions and conversions. also, here's a reference to the .max extension that may (or may not) help you out: http://filext.com/alphalist.php?extstart=%5EM

My IrfanView is version 3.91 and .max isn't on the list. Could be I'm behind the times though.

Been snooping around..seems that the workaround that the folks are using is to print to .pdf and convert from there (thread (http://groups.google.com/group/alt.comp.freeware/browse_thread/thread/8e8bb859ca5090b8/c29879a719e3a75e%23c29879a719e3a75e?sa=X&oi=groupsr&start=1&num=3)). Not easy - but do-able.

If the image will fit on your screen, just take a screenshot.

Thanks, guys, for your help. I explored your links and then accidently found another solution.

With the image open in Paperport I followed these steps:

File > Print > Setup > Microsoft Office Document Image Writer
> Properties > Advanced
> Output format > MDI

This brings up a Save As dialogue box which offers the .mdi file format as the only choice. Saying Ok then opens the image in Microsoft Office Document Imaging. From that screen,
File > Save As > TIFF.

From there, I'm in business, image opens in Photoshop Elements.

Without your responses, I don't think I would have done that exploring. Surprising what we find when we're looking for something else!

Hope this helps others with the same problem.

Thanks, Cassidy and Ro. I'd never explored MS Office Document Image Printer before. Really had no idea what it would do or why I would use it. Someday I'll have to look a little further.

Once again, my favorite question of "What happens if . . ." worked out. Ro, please feel free to post this solution on other forums as you see fit. I'm always happy to share.
