I had a bit of a play. This isn't perfect but it get's you in the ball park.
Use your polygon lasso tool to select the patch. Once you have it selected, go to Image/Adjustments/Color Balance. Then drag the Yellow-Blue slider toward the yellow. then to the same for the shadow and highlights. You will notice around the edges the color doesn't quite match, you may have to do a quick Mask selection around the edges and do a bit of fine adjusting.

There is a faded rectangle area in the blue channel. I selected it and adjusted its luminosity to match the area outside the rectangle. That's all it needed to restore the color balance.
I deselected the rectangle, selected all channels, sharpened and I was done. I see now that my polygonal-lasso selection was not perfect, but it's good enough for an example.

I like your less complicted method better. :)
