View Full Version : Nov 05 Contest T Paul 11-01-2005, 08:10 PM Nov Restoration Challenge:
The challenge this month is to restore the photo so that it looks like a professional studio photo. This means a non-painted no-wacky-background something-a-dad/mom-would-put-on-his/her-desk-at-work portrait that actually tries to use the various retouching/restoring/compositing skills we try to promote here at RP". Questions? :dizzy:

oh, and you need to include the actual deadline time, T. you've got the voting date, but not the cutoff for entry time.
Craig
edit: replaced my first with this current one. may happen yet again :) twinkissed 11-02-2005, 09:10 PM For my first contest Gary Richardson 11-03-2005, 03:44 AM Not really by bag (don't like baby pics), but had to enter so I can vote. Sorry Phil, not meant as a dig at your daughter, who's really cute, rather that I don't seem to get a handle on dealing with baby pics. Bob Down 11-03-2005, 08:49 AM Tried to keep the image integrity including the hairy furry background... Swampy 11-03-2005, 10:42 AM Here's my stab at it. smats 11-03-2005, 03:20 PM Here's my entry garazon 11-05-2005, 10:04 AM Here's my entry and my first try at a contest. Used PSP9. Used clone tool for missing areas and addressed the color corrections using paintbrush in Legacy Color mode at 50%. Along with noise reducing filters and soften brush to remove scan dots. lazze_gurra 11-06-2005, 04:17 AM The first, but not the last !! Sean2 11-06-2005, 02:47 PM hmmmmmmmmm Peter S 11-06-2005, 06:12 PM And here is mine philbach 11-06-2005, 06:25 PM Its always a pleasure to participate Cassidy 11-07-2005, 04:51 AM Here's mine cathsaigh 11-08-2005, 11:04 AM First Contest - hope it keeps up with the talent. Lorraine 11-09-2005, 05:48 AM I tried to stay as true as reasonably possible to the original. I felt that a few enhancements were necessary, such as softening the blanket and adding the missing foot.
Lorraine Shalford 11-09-2005, 07:12 AM There's some real talented entries this time! Loverly 11-09-2005, 11:29 AM A much happier baby with her new foot!
Loverly kschulz 11-09-2005, 02:43 PM Your daughter sure was a happy baby, Phil! Thanks for contributing this one - it was a lot of fun! :pleased:

Think im going to love this place - found some exciting things already!
Here is my picture for the Nov 5 contest.
Tried to get it as "studio-ish" as I could. Tried to get it so a mom or a dad would want to put it on their desk. That was my main desire. Hope I have stayed within the bounds of the rules here - seems like there are a 100 posts - all differing slightly - on what exactly the rules for this image are supposed to be.
Ray cazubi 11-12-2005, 08:26 PM Here is mine. :bigthmb: artfolio 11-13-2005, 01:46 AM Hi All! Here's my first time attempting a challenge. :classic:
She's wearing a pair of really cute bootees(I think mums will make their babies wear their best shoes when taking a pic at the studio) and her dress is more symmetrical. Cleaned up the skin and change the background to a studio-ish backdrop. Cameraken 11-13-2005, 12:57 PM Hi Everyone.
Well I finally got something I’m happy with. I Hope you like it.
Ken Mark Adams 11-13-2005, 04:59 PM I did this with the Gimp. I'm going to try another with PS if I can get the time.
EDIT: This shadow on the chest is busting my hump. I can not make it look good.
Woe is me. Marthig 11-13-2005, 08:34 PM Congratulations to all the posters so far, your results are incredible.
As to "my baby" all I can say is that I think she looks happy, and I guess have run out of tricks to improve the colouring. She may be a girl (I am not doubting Phil's word !!) but her dress was not pink, from the start I saw it as light blue, and that's what I gave her. The rest I leave for the discussion thread. Be kind with my result.
Regards - Martha :wavey:
I used several of the methods proposed in the discussion thread, and colorized as I thought looked best.
I am replacing the image again, fixed some details that I didn't like. terivon 11-14-2005, 06:22 AM Great fun as always, thank you for a lovely challenge! Took my mind off housework:) Alrighty, who am I fooling.. took my mind off the housework I wasn't doing! :lmao:
Thanks so much!
Teri NancyJ 11-14-2005, 06:39 AM Probably spent nearly 20 hours on this so I'm stopping now... could spend another 10 at least fixing all the flaws I can see in it but you just have to learn when to walk away lol. Panpan 11-17-2005, 04:46 AM I'm in the beige camp for the fur.
I think the cloth is one of those woven to show highlights of a different color depending on the angle, in this case grey with green highlights.
Pierre Always doing something different, I thought I'd to make some more fur instead of cloning a whole foot. Don't know if that was a good idea - but it was fun though.
(The colours got changed a bit somewhere along the line. If I have time I'll post one which looks more like I saw on the screen at home)
Rô DouDimmez 11-18-2005, 10:04 AM First post.. Cheers from Istanbul.. amazze 11-18-2005, 10:34 AM Seen a lot of good restored pics around so i decide to tag along too. Happy to join in the contest...... ooops group. :bigthmb: Ok, after much deliberation I've decided to make this my entry. I actually finished about 90% of it before the rather passionate discussion began over rule interpretation. Then spent the rest of the month reading with much interest as many of you shared your expertise... thanks for taking the time, I for one really appreciate your posts. chanchalbd 11-20-2005, 09:07 AM This is my first contest post Ms Bay 11-21-2005, 12:33 AM Here is my entry! MargaretM 11-21-2005, 08:43 AM Here's mine. Once again, great entries. rolffimages 11-21-2005, 09:18 AM Here is my latest  Jaime 11-21-2005, 01:19 PM Thanks Phil for this photo. Morleyuwm 11-21-2005, 10:22 PM This is my try at cleaning up the little one. I decided to fix the left foot by cropping it out instead of cloning the other. edgework 11-22-2005, 10:07 AM This was a real challenge. Fun, though. A couple hours to spare and I have an entry-- just in the nick of time, I wager ! :dizzy: MrTennet 11-22-2005, 04:51 PM This is my first contribution here. pjulich 11-22-2005, 06:20 PM Here is my attempt. I decided to crop rather than replace the foot. T Paul 11-30-2005, 07:38 PM This month’s contest winner is kschulz! Congratulations!
