I often read Wired, and I found it strange that a "modern" techy publication should run an article with such lack of foresight......
....Turning Ng's invention into a commercial product poses a few challenges. First, it works best with expensive high-resolution cameras, and when you add the price of Ng's device, the cost could be prohibitive ....Just a few years ago a 1 Megapixel camera was the wonder of the world. For the 16 M camera, mentioned there, to become commonplace surely we only have to wait a few more.
"Some people might find it over the line," he said, "because it's not being done by a person, so to speak -- it's being done by the computer." ..... this is 2005, isn't it? What isn't done by a computer?

Interesting idea though. However, something tells me that it won't catch on yet. Maybe when they reduce it all to one mass-produced chip....then we'll have a 16Mp 3D camera on a cell-phone.

we just have to wait for microsoft to buy them out. then, it will be mass produced. of course, then, it will only have 10,000 micro lenses, be XP based and you'll have to log in to register every time you want to shoot a picture. ;)

We can already see some of the technique's limitations from the three slides provided. The "synthesized" focus is not as sharp as the real one; in fact, it's quite soft in my opinion.

However, I can't wait to have something like this!
