How about something with a touch of culture?

Light and Shadow

I couldn't get a Degas out of this one (I recently posted a series of renderings on other forums that were my version of a Degas style). This one had too much shadow and darkness to get the feel of Degas. Hope I at least did a half way decent oil rendering anyway. :)

With the dramatic lighting, I thought this would make a great oil pastel

Tried something different. Used the dramatic outline to do a cutout. Replaced background, and filled both new background and foreground. Added pattern, gradient.

Mine is rendered in Painter 9.I especially like the way you handled the edges/background transistion. That's a really cool effect.

Chester:

It sure helps to have creative vision for what's possible beyond the base image and a bit of twisted wit. I can see already you're well qualified on both fronts! :)

Wow, what a beautiful thread!! Congratulations to all!

I especially liked garazon's very sensitive manipulation.
Great control over colours and mood.

This is a fantastic idea. You enhanced the mood tremendously. Very good control of the lighting too. My favorite thus far. :)

Love all the renditions of this pic here, but have to single Garazon out to say "stunning"

No way; just having some more fun with my Van Gogh Impressionist preset (http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/showthread.php?p=109946#post109946). :)

i too thought garazon's was amazing. so, i can only hope he'll forgive me for doing what i did. i dont normally take another's art and alter it and i certainly dont mean to imply that mine is better or his is less by this. i simply took his as if it were the original posting here and worked it like we would other pieces. i kept looking at his rendition and looking and the more i looked i kept seeing other 'things'. i simply attempted to add in those other 'things'.

so, if you wish, garazon, i'll remove my version of your version and no questions or squabbles about it. just p.m. me and it's gone :)

i basically did three things here. i added the water with the 'flood' plugin and colored it a bit.
i altered the lighting with 'illumination effects' in Paint Shop Pro 10.
and i cropped the image down to roughly an 8 x 10 aspect.

and again, please understand that this came about from enjoying YOUR rendition.

Here's another take on this picture. Done in Photoshop using smart blur for edges and Dry Brush for color.
Just wonderful renditions so far! Chance - I think yours is my favorite so far.

I admit it i couldn't come up with anything for this thread (even though i really wanted to do something as it is one of my favorite topics )
You have all amazed me with your renditions They are all excellent but i do think along with a few other people Garazon's submission is excellent

margaret,

and just a note here; i think you could have cropped a tad more off the empty top space. but lovely!

Well I have to say thanks for all the compliments, it is much appreciated. Sometimes things hit ya and when I first saw this one I knew what I wanted to do with it. Hardest part was trying to get the color right so that it would match the background, I think it could be better, but I was starting to get aggravated!

Thanks again all for the nice words, I feel honored especially when the words come from those whose abilities are way beyond mine. :classic: and I see many that I like more than mine, Chance, yours is superb IMO

Craig, no problem from me on what ya did. I've got this vision now after seeing the water, to put them on a small deserted island with the ocean as a background, of course there will have to be a moon in it!

MargaretM

Craig - thanks so much and you are probably right about the cropping. Loved your watery rendition of Garazon's stunning moon version. I think the collective creative juices are flowing in 2006.

Everyone seems drawn to the lights/shadows of this image, as I was.

Cropped heavily to put emphasis on the couple, then did Polar Coord. before and after Crystalize, then added layer blends and lighting effects to intensify the contrasts...

Enjoy!

More great renditions since last I visited this thread. Great jobs!

Absolutely, I kept being drawn back to this because of that. To be honest the first time I saw it, I passed it over, didn't see anything in it, but now I can't get the darn thing out of my head!

No matter what was in my mind, this wanted to come out.
I like it! I have a lot in my mind that wants to come out, but it seems to get lost in the translation

This isn't real?? Dang, I told everyone I had a new job.. oh well, it IS fun!

I really like the work that is being done in this thread. The picture brings out all sorts of "mood", which people are interpreting.

RL, yours is probably the most dreamy and old fashioned. I like it. It reminds of of a Victorian card.

Janet - very different. Surreal in the true sense of the word and very creative. I agree about this thread. Seems we are all responding to the mood of the picture, as well as the technical challenge.

Janet!!! Oooooooh, I love that! I stand corrected -- it's NOT just the lights/shadows -- it's the emotion of the two dancers -- his gaze into her eyes as his strong muscles hold her delicate body...

Very creative, intense, lovely!

Danny, you sure come up with some fantastic photos! Like others, the light and shadow, expression and sense of motion drew me in.

Since they are "on stage" I thought some lighting effects would be appropriate. I also wanted to capture them as sort of a statue. Ergo the soft green.

Masked out the dancers, made a duplicate file and made it a duotone with the soft green and black. brought that back into the original, added the tripple spots and a b/w gradient layer to dampen the lighting effect.

Added a layer of soft smoke for the stage. (Painted with a blotchy brush in the soft green color, gausian blur and added film grain). Didn't want to go overboard because the male dancer needs to look "grounded". I tried a more ethereal effect, but just got the feeling that he didn't have a solid enough base and might drop the girl...LOL

Now that's an interpretation. I don't know whether it's one I should be proud of though! :o: But I had fun with it, and I'll try to contain my lack of culture , for a while anyway
You should all probably thank Danny for this.. "* For each mini-challenge, post up to two (2) interpretations" or who knows where I might have gone with it.

Glad it brought a chuckle to you all, Now back to our regularly scheduled real photo based art.. :bigthmb:
